Northern Virginia Area
Tree and Shrub Care
It is important to remember that pruning of plants
is a process, not an event. There is no one-day of the year that all
plants are to be pruned. Each species has very specific pruning needs
based on flower production and the local growing conditions. The first
priority is pruning for optimal flower production, second is structural
pruning for plant development and third is space management (the most
common need in mature landscapes).
Our employees are trained to recognize
and care for the most common landscape trees and shrubs in Northern Virginia.
If you have extensive planting areas with unusual specimens, an ISA-certfied staff arborist will review proper pruning requirements with the assigned technician. Additionally, specialty pruning instructions will
be entered into your property notes for the technician’s future
reference.
Tips: Recommended Northern VA Native Trees & Shrubs
If you're looking for an interesting addition to your landscaping
we invite you to take a look at some of the following locally native trees and shrubs (factsheets courtesy of the USDA). These locally native trees and shrubs are ideally suited for Mid-Atlantic/ Piedmont-regional temperatures, rainfall levels, and soil conditions.

Our staff Horticulturist, Cate Feck, along with the VA Dept. of Conservation & Recreation and the Virginia Native Plant Society have recommended any of the above plants in place of the Autumn Olive and Russian Olive (shown at left, photo by J.S. Peterson, courtesy of the USDA). Although attractive and loved by birds for their fruit, in part, for this reason, both varieties of Olives have become prolific invasives.
"Autumn olive is a very troublesome
invasive species in Virginia. In addition
to its prolific fruiting, seed
dispersal by birds, rapid growth and
ability to thrive in poor soil, Autumn
olive resprouts vigorously after cutting
or burning. It creates heavy
shade which suppresses plants that
require direct sunlight."
~Virginia Native Plant Society
According to the society, a concentration of Russian Olives has established in Fairfax County, Virginia and threaten many smaller species to even large, sturdy trees like the Cottonwood. Careful removal of saplings by hand when the ground is moist is the recommended method of removal, however for more established plants, contact Deehan Landscaping for careful herbicidal removal. If you've discovered other invasives on your property in need of removal and replacement with more locally sustainable alternatives, please contact Horticulturist, Cate Feck. cate@deehanlandscaping.com
